GUAM
The most common and persistent disease in Guam is Diabetes mellitus with the average age of 18 years old. The disease is seen mostly in the Chammoros. You can find your path today in helping your community fight the disease.
Guam joined the Pacific STEP-UP Program in 2009 with the help of local coordinator, Kristina Torres from the University of Guam. Students who are accepted into the program will conduct their research at the University of Guam or at another local agency together with an experienced research mentor. The Guam Local High School Summer Research Symposium has been held each year since 2014. Two students are chosen each year to attend the National High School STEP-UP Scientific Research Symposium in Washington, DC where they are able to present their summer research projects to both peers and professionals from academia and the research industry. Additionally, a participation allowance is given to each participant upon successful completion of the program.

Dr. Anita Borja Enriquez

Anita Borja Enriquez is Senior Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs at the University of Guam. A former Dean of the School of Business and Public Administration, corporate planning and development manager, and management consultant, Dr. Enriquez established her first business at the age of 19. She secured over $1 million in technical assistance grants from the U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration to establish the UOG Pacific Center for Economic Initiatives, the Defense Logistics Agency to establish the Guam Procurement Technical Assistance Center, the U.S. Small Business Administration to establish the new Guam Veterans Business Outreach Center, and the Department of the Interior Office of Insular Affairs to launch the “Buy Local Guam” marketing educational campaign. Dr. Enriquez was founding Vice President of the Guam Women’s Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, and was the founding member of the Guam Museum Foundation Board of Directors and the founding Vice President of the Guam Marketing Association. She is currently Vice President of Guampedia Foundation, Inc. Board of Directors, and member of the Pacific Islands Small Business Development Center Advisory Board and the Guam-Micronesia Mission Education Board. She has served on the Junior Achievement Board of Directors, the Guam Chamber of Commerce Small Business Focus and Development Committee, Guam Visitors Bureau’s Administrative and Legislative Affairs Committee, Guam Procurement Advisory Council, and Rotary Club of Tumon Bay Board of Directors. Dr. Enriquez was awarded the U.S. SBA 2013 Women in Business Champion of the Year, the 2006 and 2012 UOG Administrator of the Year Award, 2011 GCC Alumna of the Year Award, and Academy of Economics and Economic Education Distinguished Research Award. She is married to Noel Enriquez, and together they have three children and a granddaughter.

Ms. Kristina Sayama
University of Guam
Ms. Kristina Sayama is a Program Coordinator IV in the Office of the Assistant Vice President of Graduate Studies, Research and Sponsored Programs at the University of Guam. She actively assists with recruitment and retention in the University's graduate programs and supports the research endeavors of the University. She has worked at the University of Guam for twenty years, starting at what was then the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, has served several terms on the University's Staff Council Executive Committee, has taught as Adjunct Instructor, and has served as an Equal Employment Opportunity Counselor for the past fifteen years. Kristina is a first-generation college graduate and a product of the University of Guam, she earned a paralegal certificate and a bachelor of science degree in Public Administration in the fall of 2003 --and in the spring of 2005, she earned a master's degree in Public Administration. Kristina is proud to be part of the Triton legacy --as the University of Guam is celebrating its 61st anniversary of holding true to its mission, "Ina, Diskubre, Setbe" or "To Enlighten, To Discover, To Serve" on Guam, Micronesia and the neighboring regions of the Pacific and Asia.
