HOW TO APPLY
Students may apply to the program via the online student portal, which can be found at https://stepup.niddk.nih.gov/Register.aspx. You will first need to register to create an account. After creating an account, you will be able to login to the student portal to work on, save, and submit an application. Your application will not be submitted until you hit SUBMIT on the last page. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.
ADDITIONAL REQUIRED COMPONENTS

Complete high school transcript (including Fall semester grades)

2 letters of recommendation (if you are a past participant, one of your LoR must come from your previous research mentor)

Personal Statement (600 words maximum)

The personal statement is arguably the most important part of the application. It is your opportunity to communicate to the review committee who you are as an individual as well as any unique circumstances you may have. Your personal statements should address the following:

Various events or experiences that have helped shape your desire to learn more about biomedical, clinical, social or behavioral research

Your short and/or long-term academic and career goals

​How a research expierence through STEP-UP will positively influence your career developement
If you are a past STEP-UP participant, your personal statement must indicate how your experience in STEP-UP has impacted and/or influenced you and your future career plans.
