HAWAII
Hawaii has been involved with the STEP-UP Program since 2001 under the direction of Dr. George Hui. Students from all islands of Hawaii are encouraged to apply. Individuals who are accepted from Oahu, Maui, Kauai, Molokai, or Lanai will complete their internship at the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine. Those from the Big Island of Hawaii will do intern at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. Interns will be paired with an experienced research mentor who is affiliated with their designated institution. At the end of the 8-week program, interns travel to Washington, DC for the annual National High School STEP-UP Scientific Research Symposium where they present their summer research projects to both peers and professionals from academia and the research industry. A participation allowance is given to each participant upon successful completion of the program.

Dr. George Hui is a Research Professor at the University of Hawaii. His research interests involve the development of vaccines against human malaria, the immunology of malaria infections, and the immunological mechanisms of action of vaccine adjuvants. Although Dr. Hui's research and funding support fall under NIAID/NIH, Dr. Hui has been involved with NIDDK/NIH's initiatives to support research training of high school students since 2002. He has coordinated training activities for high school students from Hawaii under NIDDK/C. Drew University, and has been responsible for organizing the NIDDK STEP-UP program for students in Hawaii, Alaska, and Puerto Rico. Most recently he has been helping to oversee the coordination of STEP-UP in the Pacific region.

Raechel Kadler
University of Hawaii at Manoa
Ms. Kadler graduated from the University of British Columbia in 2018 with a BS in Biochemistry. She then developed her research experience further at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, working as a research assistant in Dr. Angel Yanagihara’s laboratory. In 2020, Ms. Kadler enrolled in the Tropical Medicine PhD program at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. She is currently in that department while serving as a Program Coordinator for the Pacific STEP-UP Program.
PROGRAM ASSISTANT
Elisabeth Kamaka
University of Hawaii at Manoa
Ms. Kamaka graduated from the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 2019 with a BA in English. She also received a graduate certificate in Tropical Medicine. In 2023, she enrolled in the Communication Sciences & Disorders Master's Program at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. She is currently in that department while serving as a Program Coordinator Assistant for the Pacific STEP-UP Program.
